Biometrics (Visa Biometrics)

Biometrics in the visa process means providing your fingerprints and photograph at a visa application center, used for identity verification.

What It Means

Biometric data collection is a standard part of many visa applications worldwide. It involves visiting an authorized visa application center (like VFS Global or TLSContact) in person, where your ten fingerprints are digitally scanned and a photograph is taken. This data is linked to your visa application and used to verify your identity at immigration checkpoints. Biometric data is usually valid for a period (e.g., 5 years for Schengen), meaning you may not need to provide them again if reapplying within that window. The process takes just a few minutes but requires an in-person appointment.

What This Means for Indian Travelers

Indian travelers encounter biometrics most commonly when applying for UK, Schengen, US, Canada, and Australian visas. VFS Global and TLSContact are the main service providers in India with centers in most major cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, etc.). You'll need to book an appointment, show up in person, and it takes about 15-20 minutes. For Schengen, biometrics are valid for 59 months — so if you applied within the last 5 years, you might be exempt from another visit.

Examples

  • 1
Schengen visa — Biometrics at VFS/TLSContact, valid for 59 months
  • 2
UK visa — Biometrics at VFS Global centers across India
  • 3
US visa — Fingerprints taken at the embassy during interview
  • 4
Canada visa — Biometrics at VFS Global, valid for 10 years

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to give biometrics every time I apply?

Not always. Schengen biometrics are valid for 59 months. UK and Canada also have validity periods. If your biometrics are still valid from a previous application, you may be exempt.

What if my fingerprints can't be captured?

If fingerprints can't be captured due to temporary conditions (cuts, burns), you'll be asked to return when healed. Permanent inability is noted and alternative verification is used.

Can someone else give biometrics on my behalf?

No. Biometrics must be provided in person — that's the whole point. However, certain categories (young children, diplomats) may be exempt from fingerprinting.

Pro Tips

  • Book biometric appointments early — slots fill up fast during peak travel season
  • Keep your fingers clean and dry for the appointment — moisturize if your skin is very dry
  • Biometric centers have strict rules: no phones, no bags in some cases — travel light
  • If you gave Schengen biometrics in the last 59 months, you can apply by mail in some countries
